Caring for your Tattoo

Curated by David Skinner NAT Artist

Tattoo Artist Removing Stencil
  • As soon as I have finished the tattoo and pictures have been taken, I will wrap the tattoo in cling film, this must remain on for at least two hours. (The tattoo will weap or ooze (plasma) this is normal, so there is nothing to worry about!

  • There are many different creams you can use but we recommend the Tattoo aftercare.

  • After the two hours have passed, firstly, make sure your hands are completely clean, then wash down the tattoo with warm water only, do not use soap, do not scrub. Make sure that you have washed the entire area using only your hand, then dab clean with a kitchen towel (DO NOT USE A NORMAL TOWEL).

  • After this let the new tattoo air dry for around 10 minutes, this is important. Every person is different and so reactions can/may differ from person to person.

  • Then using a small amount of Tattoo After-Care Cream, rub on over the entire area making sure that there is just a thin layer that covers the Tattoo. Use the cream every 3-4 hours  (Making sure hands are clean) until healed, usually around 7-10 days.

  • After a few days the tattoo will have produced a protective layer. This will begin to flake off, (Do not worry, this is completely normal) and it then may start to itch, this is the itchy stage. Never be tempted to itch the Tattoo, as this will destroy it (If need be, a gentle tap will take the itch away and will not harm the Tattoo)

Can I get my new tattoo dirty?

You must keep clean at all times, try to let the air get to the new tattoo as much as possible! Whilst healing, it is best to wrap the tattoo in cling film if you intend on playing muddy sports.

Can I swim or use a sunbed?

You must not go swimming, or use a Sauna or Sun-bed for a period of 4 weeks after you have had the tattoo.

Can I bathe in the bath?

Yes you can have a bath but do not soak the Tattoo in the water at all, as this will hinder the healing process, it is always best to shower.

How do I dry my Tattoo?

When drying, do not be tempted to rub the Tattoo, just dab dry while it's in the healing process.

Can I go on Holiday?

Yes, you can still go on holiday, but always make sure you have at least 4 weeks between the Tattoo and going on holiday to allow for the healing process.

Can I use fake/real tan?

No, during the healing process, the new Tattoo must be covered when in the sun and fake Tan must not be applied in any way to the healing area.
